The Daily Star February 25, 2003 Arsenic detected in 597 tubewells in Chapainawabganj UNB, Chapainawabganj Arsenic beyond permissible limit has been detected in 597 tubewells in Chapainawabganj municipality area recently. The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) sources said water of 1738 tubewells were examined in the area under Arsenic Mitigation Water Supply Project and it was detected in 597 tubewells. Besides, arsenic contamination has been detected in the waters of two deep tubewells of the water supply system of the municipality. Locals said the tubewells have been sealed off without any alternative arrangement of supply of pure water in the area. Some 38 arsenic related disease affected people have been identified in the area.
