New Age July 5, 2004 Home 1,649 arsenic patients found in Comilla Our Correspondent, Comilla, July 4 Arsenic is posing a great threat to the health of the people of nine upazilas of Comilla. Lack of awareness and alternative sources of water, inhabitants of Daudkandi (Titas, Meghna), Homna, Muradnagar Barura, Laksam, Nangalkot and Chauddagram and sadar have been using water of red-marked tube wells that contain arsenic. The villagers are not aware of the bad affect of arsenic. So they do not hesitate to drink and use the arsenic-contaminated water in their day to day life. Generally most of them do not bother to consult with registered physicians in any kind of physical problem. So the real number of arsenic affected patient is not known. According to Dr Abdul Kadar Miah, civil surgeon of Comilla, some 1,649 arsenic affected people were found in Comilla in 2003. Of them, 166 in Laksam, 143 in Daudkandi, 139 in Chouddagram, 134 in Homna, 94 in Muradnagor, 70 in Barura and three persons of Nangalkot were being treated.
